Iowa Pride vs South Carolina Guts
While this goes on, Iowans and South Carolinians are moving on with their lives and building, dreaming, and producing - sort of like the old ant farm I used to have.
I can't see how this will make the people (which form the basis for good political parties) any more excited about the process of selecting a candidate than they already aren't.
South Carolina poised to push up primary
WASHINGTON - South Carolina is poised to hold its Republican presidential primary earlier than Feb. 2, 2008, likely in mid-January, a move that is expected to push New Hampshire and Iowa to follow suit.Uh, you moved when you passed a law that requires Iowa to hold the first caucus in the nation. Not realizing that you are in fact losing control over the setting of that caucus has caused the caucus to become a joke among most sane people in Iowa.
"If they move, we will move. We'll have to see what happens," said Ray Hoffmann, Iowa Republican Party chairman.
Because New Hampshire has a law too...
And this is how things will probably work out if South Carolina goes through with their plans to move up their primary to January 19th (the most likely scenario)...
As I said...irrelevant a long time ago. Nobody cares but the press.
- South Carolina moves to Jan 19th.
- Since New Hampshire law requires their primary be held 7-days before anyone else which would mean January 12.
- Since January 12th is a Saturday, they'll probably move it earlier to the 10th or even the 8th of January.
- Iowa law requires they hold the first in the nation caucus...so when would they hold it? New Years Day? If the hawks aren't in a bowl game, it might work.
- Earlier? Tuesday, December 25th? Nope.
Iowans will not take kindly to a constantly floating day that we need to care enough to go out and participate in something like a caucus. Iowans don't like change and all but the most extreme will avoid it.
I'm going back to my ant farm.
